I’ve been listening to M83 since 2003’s Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts, which was when Nicolas Fromageau was with Anthony Gonzalez. I loved that album. But they’ve changed, become more pop less ambient / shoegaze, less gritty. And I keep wanting to hate what they do now thus me avoiding their last album like the plague. But truth be told, I don’t. They consistently release good pop tunes. And there ain’t nothing wrong with that. Congrats M83… And what’s that wailing at the end? ace is what it is… (PS. If you haven’t heard Dead Cities it’s pretty amazing… highly recommended)

So i must admit I’m more than a little happy that Hope Sandoval and David Roback have come back together for the first time since Among My Swan in 1996 (ahem). And come back together with form no less.
They were a soundtrack to my life for a good 8 years or so and it hasn’t been quite the same with Hope’s solo projects or collabs with the likes of the late Bert Jansch, Death in Vegas, the Chemical Bros, and Massive Attack (though the Burial remix of Paradise Circus is well worth listening to if you have half an hour) as they just didn’t have the quiet magic that Mazzy Star had.
So I’m happy. And in saying that, I’m a little sad as it takes me back to another life. But that’s what their music always did best I guess!
From the vault:
Artist: Junior Boys
Track: Teach Me How to Fight
Album: Last Exit, 2004
Label: Domino
Junior Boys used be one of my favourite bands in the mid 2000’s, and Last Exit, their first album was my favourite of all their albums. For some reason I originally thought they were from Sweden (god knows why), but of course, they were Canadian, as were most of the bands I was in to back then were (god knows why).
This is when Junior boys were awesome. They lost me some time after So This is Goodbye…
Just so melancholic and hopeful. Ambient / electronic inspired pop music. Beautiful!
Thanks to Hazlenutcream for the below post, I went to check out the music from it, from New York based The Golden Filter. Some really beautiful stuff… Atmospheric, Filmic, Progressive. Really lovely and very interesting…
